Thanks to my gorgeous but chew obsessed puppy I have been without internet for three weeks. He has decided that computer cables are totally awesome to chew in two when I am not looking.
I have now puppy proofed my house. this is as bad as having a toddler around. Putting everything up high making sure there are child proof locks on the cupboards he can get into. I even bought a cable tidy kit. Not that this will stop him but hopefully it will slow the little bugger down a little.
When do they grow out of the chewing stage? So far I have lost two laptop power adaptors, My favourite pair of jeans, countless shoes and a gorgeous brooch I had in my possession for less than a week!
He has numerous chew toys which he is content to chew on when I am around but as soon as I am out of sight he goes straight for my stuff! And only my stuff! Noah will leave his door open and Dex won't go near it. But if I leave anything within reach it is destroyed.
He is no where near as cute with one of my Nike's hanging out of his mouth!
So three weeks without internet at home other than a very unreliable service on my mobile phone has meant no blog updates. I haven't even been able to read other people's blog updates. Let alone all the other things I now use the internet for.
It made me wonder how the hell I survived before I owned a computer? How did I find the time to pay all my bills. Going into the bank, the post office and individual phone companies and energy suppliers offices. Even checking the bank balance was a trip out.
Contacting family members meant long distance calls or long letters not turning on skype or sending a message on Facebook.
We live in an age of instant gratification which is fueled by little cables. I don't believe we would have the patience we had even 10 years ago to stand in a queue at the bank to pay bills manually or the time to sit down and write a long letter, go to the photo shop to have a film developed and then post off photos and the letter at the post office. Not now when we can send an email attach the photos and press send.
When researching services we got out a cumbersome heavy book of phone numbers and rang numerous people until we got the answers we were looking for. Now we have google.
School assignments meant hours in the library reading through books and encyclopedias until we found what we needed. Now we have Google. Pictures for the assignment were photocopied from these books. Now we have google images.
Travelling meant getting out huge maps and marking the direction you needed to go. Now we have GPS and Whereis.com.
Spelling was an important part of school. Now we have spellcheck. With all sms talk becoming a language of its own English is becoming like Latin. an ancient language that in years to come people will specialise in translating (ok that was a bit overdramatic but considering even some of the work emails I get are in this shortened sms talk language maybe not so dramatic) are we getting so impatient we can't even take the time to write a complete sentence?
Maybe we just need to take a breath now and then a slow down again. I am surprised that with all the time saving capabilities that the internet and computer have I still constantly feel rushed.
Oh well, rant over.
Here is a picture of my troublesome puppy!
