Animal Farm

Anyone who says animals don't have their own personalities haven't met my menagerie.
I have two cats, Mulder and Scully, who are coming up to their 4th birthday on Halloween and of course my Jack Russell x Foxy puppy Dexter.

Mulder is, most kindly put, simple. He talks constantly and you just know that what he is saying is "I don't understand" He will be meowing at the door so you open the door to let him in and he looks at you and whines some more "I don't know what to doooooo" You say "come inside Mulder" and he replies "hoooowwwww?" He is clueless! It took Scully five seconds to work out how to jump inside through an open window, Mulder still can't figure it out. He just sits looking at the window and cries "what do I doooooo?" It would be sad if it wasn't so funny.
There are a few rays of hope to show that he is not completely brain dead. Scully will catch a mouse and drop it at the door. As soon as she drops it Mulder will push in front of her and claim it as his own and meow as loudly as possible "look what I did!" until you tell him how clever he is. As soon as he gets this recognition of his pseudo hunting skills he will try to eat it in front you. He is food motivated. Scully just likes the chase. If Mulder was a human he would totally be a stoner.

Scully should have been an only child. She has a bad case of Jan Brady syndrome. Instead of "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" Its "Mulder, Mulder, Mulder" If he is getting the slightest bit of attention she will storm off in a huff. She is not a talker like Mulder. The only time she makes noise is when she is growling and hissing at Dexter if he is within 200 metres of her.
About a year ago Mulder went walkabout for a few days. (I am still convinced that he went into the backyard and couldn't work out how to walk around the side of the house without being shown how) While Mulder was gone, Scully became the perfect housecat. She curled up on your lap and purred constantly. As soon as she heard Mulder meowing at the front door after returning from his adventure she woke up, stuck her nose in the air and jumped out the window. I didn't see her again until the next time she wanted food.

My little jumping bean Dexter is a typical child. He always has one eye on you for cuddles and attention and the other eye on anything chewable. He is a little mischief maker but so adorable when he cocks his head and looks at you with those big brown eyes whenever you discipline him as if to say" What'd I do?"

How the three of them interact together is adorable. Mulder and Scully are typical brother and sister. They get along beautifully most of the time but occasionally Mulder will get on Scully's nerves with his constant attention and she will give him a swipe. Food time is fun. Mulder is always the first at the door to tell me his hungry (this can happen all day as ten minutes after he is fed he has forgotten he has eaten and starts to demand food again). I will go out to feed him and say "find your sister and then I feed you" and he goes running up to the fence and meows at it until she jumps over for food as well. (At which time Mulder looks at her as if to say "how do you do that?" then remembers he is eating and runs at the bowl).

Scully and Dexter do not get along. I had high hopes that Scully's maternal instincts would kick in when Dexter was little as she was extremely curious about him. It didn't last. As soon as Dex barked at her the first time she hissed and growled and it has not improved since. Dexter sees it as a game now. He sees her and gets a big grin on his face then bolts at her barking and pouncing much to Scully's disgust.

What disgusts Scully most of all is the fact that her brother has become best friends with of all things - a dog! Mulder and Dexter, play and cuddle constantly. Mulder sees Dexter and runs at him meowing. Dexter has even managed to teach Mulder a few tricks. After nearly four years, Mulder now knows how to jump on the couch without assistance. He even walks through the front door all by himself. Dexter is Mulder's assistance dog.

The only issue we have had with Mulder and Dexter has been Dexter trying to hump the cat, but thankfully now that Dex has had his snip this seems to be getting better slowly. (thank god!)

Pets are amazing. The joy, laughter and stress release they give you is endless whether you are laughing with or at them.

Who needs prozac when you have furry little characters like these around!
